In some implementations, each camera has its own on board processing capabilities to perform some preliminary processing on the captured video data before sending the processed video data along with metadata obtained through the preliminary processing to the controller device and/or the server system 164. In accordance with some implementations, each of the client devices 220 includes a client side module. The client side module communicates with a server side module executed on the server system 164 through the one or more networks 162. The client side module provides client side functionality for the event monitoring and review processing and communications with the server side module. The server side module provides server side functionality for event monitoring and review processing for any number of client side modules each residing on a respective client device 220. The server side module also provides server side functionality for video processing and camera control for any number of the video sources 222, including any number of control devices and the cameras. In some implementations, the server system 164 includes one or more processors 212, a video storage database 210, an account database 214, an I/O interface to one or more client devices 216, and an I/O interface to one or more video sources 218. The I/O interface to one or more clients 216 facilitates the client facing input and output processing.
