Peregrine Falcon Fledgling
Peregrine Falcon Fledgling

Diary - 2011

I've been unable to spend much time at the Rock this year, but can give you a quick run-down. Thanks to all who have written asking what's going on.

There is one sad thing to share with those of you who have been regular falcon watchers with us. Norm Sherr died recently after a long battle with cancer. Norm was a life long falconer and devotee of our Peregrines.

On the south side, Khaos and Elvis have chosen some unusual nesting sites. Their first, below the "diving board" hole, is one Cleve refers to as the "mail slot." In my 20+ years of watching the Peregrines, I don't remember their ever having used that spot. It's quite small and not very deep. Their attempt there ended in failure when the rain storms blew in. They have recycled and are nesting about 100' feet below their usual spots. We'll see how that goes, with perhaps another two weeks to go before hatching.

On the north side, Milli and Esteban have sucessfully hatched at least two youngsters. They are at a nest site used with mixed results over the years. Cleve has been taking video. I'll include those and his images - he's our source for information this year.

May 10 - In this video, look for the fluffy white chicks in the center lower part of the screen behind the green plant. When a parent flies in with some food they become more easily seen.

Stick around. New images, video, and information will be added as things develop.

An update: Cleve reports seeing a third chick today.

May 12
Cleve reports: "Not as much wind and a bit more action, although viewing is still obstructed in this nest site. In the last scene, if you listen closely you can hear the chick kakking at the gulls... Like mother, like offspring."

May 15
Cleve says there are four chicks in the north side nest, soon to become fledglings. Look for a lot of action when they do. This is the best time to get to watch peregrines. Come on out!
